Movies- February 2011

And again, for clarification, I am using the same rating conversion system that Netflix uses for Stars, that is-

1 Star = Hated it
2 Stars = Didn't like it
3 Stars = Liked it
4 Stars = Really Liked it
5 Stars = Loved it

Despicable Me (2010)
Watched on: 7 Feb 2011
Rated: PG
Three Actors: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand
Reaction: Jilleun- This movie was really cute. I’m not the biggest fan of cartoons/animated movies but this one was pretty good. Although some of the funny parts were kinda ruined because I had already heard things about it, I wish I hadn’t.
Funny! The movie was not at all what I was expecting. Having not seen very many trailers, posters or anything for the film.. I was expecting just some kids movie.  Well, I got some kids movie, but it was a lot better than I thought it would be! It was a nice little change rooting for the bad guys instead.
Rating: 5/5

Fair Game (2010)
Watched on: 9 Feb 2011
Rated: PG-13
Two Actors: Naomi Watts, Sean Penn
Reaction: Jilleun- This movie was over my head a lot of the time, partly because I couldn’t understand what they were saying half the time. Although the story to me was interesting, I was bored watching it.
Kelvin- Heavy in the political propaganda department.  I say bleh to propaganda as blatant as this.  It was an okay movie, but I 1- wouldn’t recommend it to anyone 2- definitely would not watch it again.  I don’t know that much about the real story, but I really feel like some of the facts were embellished or at least exaggerated (maybe to enrage people more?).  At least the propaganda in Wall Street (a movie we watched later in the month) had a cool story to cover it up.
Rating: 2/5

This Is It (2009)
Watched on: 11 Feb 2011
Rated: PG
Main Character: Michael Jackson
Reaction: Jilleun- I think MJ is freaking nuts. Not like a cool nuts but he was definitely on some drugs nuts. I honestly don’t like his music and I just don’t get the hype about him.
We’ve semi-watched this one before.  It’s a highly interesting documentary about the tour that Michael Jackson was planning before his untimely death in 2009.  Even if you don’t like his music, I would recommend watching this.. I didn’t know him IRL, but I feel like a lot of his (Michael) personality and quirks really show through.
Rating: 4/5

Food, Inc. (2008)
Watched on: 15 Feb 2011
Rated: PG
Reaction: Jilleun- I was surprised how much this movie didn’t bother me (thank goodness). It was a cool movie to get an inside look and understanding of our food. After we finished it, I felt like the movie was just trying to show that big food companies are evil, although the Monsanto company did seem completely evil.  But some companies have figured out better and cheaper ways to produce food, which I can agree with. It was sad to hear that we genetically engineer chickens to eat and stuff.
Kelvin- For some reason we had a few different people talk about this within just a few days of each other, so we streamed it from Netflix.  This was another highly politically motivated documentary/movie.  I was more interested in the machinery and food processes than the agenda they were trying to push.  It didn’t turn me away from processed foods or turn me towards organic foods in any way.  One thing that really bugged me was the effort that they put into showing us how dangerous this particular strain of E. Coli was, so much that “they” have been pushing legislation for several years.  Sorry Barbara,  but, to me it really isn’t that important if only about 520 people die from it in their food.. and 81 times that number (42k) die in accidental car wrecks, which are also preventable deaths.
Rating: 3/5

Wall Street, Money Never Sleeps (2010)
Watched on: 18 Feb 2011
Rated: PG-13
Three Actors: Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan
Reaction: Jilleun- I had higher hopes for this movie, Shia did good, Carey was a let down. But I had predicted the ending and was bummed that I was right.
Man, we’ve been watching a lot of loaded movies recently.  I didn’t necessarily hate this movie, it gave a good “inside” view of the financial market and some of the this-definitely-happened shady business that went down between big companies.  Like I said in Fair Game, this movie at least had a cool enough story to cover up the fact that they were pushing their opinions on you.
Rating: 3/5

That Thing You Do! (1996)
Watched on: 20 Feb 2011
Rated: PG
Three Actors: Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler, Tom Hanks
Reaction: Jilleun- I love this movie, it’s a family favorite. I love the music, I like the little love story, I like that actors, and the quotable lines. Also, I like it because it was well done from: the sets, to the background dancers, and the cinematography.
I really liked how it was written almost like it was a true story documentary of a real band, when in reality it was all totally made up. Good acting. Good song(s). Good movie! :)
Rating: 4/5

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)
Watched on: 22 Feb 2011
Rated: PG
Three Actors: Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, Ben Barnes
Reaction: Jilleun- Eh. I’m glad we saw it at the dollar theater.
Kelvin- Lucy drives me nuts, she’s just so stupid. Edmund is pretty sweet though, most of the time.  The story was okay. I didn’t read the book, but the entire thing was pretty predictable with only a few small twists that caught you off guard.  That stupid and annoying cousin Eustace (“Useless”) almost made me drop the rating a whole point.
Rating: 3/5

Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)
Watched on: 24 Feb 2011
Rated: PG-13
Three Actors: Nicolas Cage, Giovanni Ribisi, Angelina Jolie
Reaction: Jilleun- Another family favorite, ok maybe mine and my Dad’s favorites. This is an enjoyable car movie unlike Fast and the Furious. It has good acting with a few funny parts, and lots of pretty cars.
Kelvin- Hooray for bad guys again!  Stealing fast cars should be the plot of every movie, alas it isn’t.  I really like Nicolas Cage and his acting, so that made it that much better.  But! I hate Angeline Jolie, which makes it pretty much even I guess.  The movie was a lot dirtier and more sexual than I remember it being, but I guess looking back at things you really only remember the cool things: Eleanor
Rating: 5/5

Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Watched on: 27 Feb 2011
Rated: PG
Three Actors: Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie
Reaction: Jilleun- I thought this movie was pretty lame. Ginormica, really?
This was more of a time-filler than anything.  It was something to do with the family on a Sunday.  Since it usually takes a good chunk of time for everyone to agree on a movie, I had the remote and chose this without taking advice from anyone.  This is exactly what I was talking about when I was thinking of “some kids movie” in my Despicable Me comments.

Well, it seems like it was quite a productive month. I have to admit, I am rather partial to Despicable Me. That movie was pretty entertaining.
